Life Cycle Of Hybrid Cars
Man has made and developed many things for his comforts. In this urge of finding comfort, he ignored the cost of this comfort that the whole human kind will have to pay. Man refused to look into the drastic affects that it has on our environment, and how it will affect the natural habitat on earth. However, now we are paying the price of the means of comfort.
Hybrid cars are basically half battery-electric and half conventional cars. The hybrid vehicles uses temporary energy storage devices usually batteries, which enable the main engine to operate at, close to its maximum efficiency.
People have become more aware of the things that are causing damage to the environment; therefore, they are buying and using things and methods that are more energy-efficient and environment friendly. One of these things is a hybrid car.
According to a Lifecycle analysis of gas, hybrid and electric cars done by Sam Abuelsamid, the battery powered cars are more energy intensive to build than gas or hybrid cars. The primary reason for this is the cost of producing the batteries.
One of the major things that people want to know about hybrid cars is their life cycle. The major source of power in the hybrid cars is it battery, therefore, you need to know about the type of batteries available and their positive and negative aspects. The life cycle of hybrid cars partially depends upon the lifecycle of its batteries.
The lifespan of Prius, a hybrid car was compared to a mid-sized gasoline vehicle and the Prius came out better in the lifecycle assessment (LCA) for emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other unhealthy and undesirable emissions. The lifespan was taken as 10 years use/100,000km. It was further found that more CO2 is emitted during Prius- a hybrid car production but the Prius makes up for it over its driving lifetime.
The life cycles span also encompasses the recycling and disposing. Toyota hybrid cars, for example, do have a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Each part of the battery including its precious metals, plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring is recycled. Toyota has also given a toll free number along with every battery to call for recycling and disposing information.
The hybrid cars have been confirmed to achieve as much as 250 mpg. So, the potential of hybrid technology offers too much that one cannot resist investing in it. In combination with diesel and biodiesel, it offers a realistic solution to ending oil dependency which is especially necessary in the face of the price hike of oil in recent times. From a lifecycle cost perspective the hybrid cars, although costlier have become more viable choice than its gasoline counterparts.
