The invention of car was made to provide easy mode of transportation to consumers, and at that time nobody had ever thought about the environmental effects of this invention such as, its fuel-effectiveness. Today it has become impossible to live with this ignorant notion. The reason is that today the world is entirely different than it was in the 18th century because at that time the environmental impact of cars was not considered.
The evolution of cars is very interesting. The engine of the first car was based on steam. As more developments were made, the steam engine was replaced by electric motor along with storage batteries. Porsche, a German, invented the first hybrid car. He used an internal combustion engine to spin a generator. The generator in turn provided power to the electric motors located in the hubs of the wheel. This car could travel up to 40 miles on battery alone.
Invention by Porsche laid down the basics of the hybrid cars of today that depend upon two kinds of engines for propulsion power: gasoline and electric engines, or diesel and electric engines.
Hybrid cars, if at one end, provide fuel-efficiency, at the other end, they have drawbacks. The major problem caused by gasoline or diesel engine cars is the environmental deterioration. The maximum power per pound can be only achieved from fossil fuels; however, they are not being used because of their slacking reserves and continuously increasing prices. On the other hand, the electric cars are environmental friendly and they do not produce pollutants; however, they require a lot of time to recharge and their performance is not really high.
The question arises, what makes hybrid cars successful? The answer to this question is very simple, and that is, hybrid cars combine the strengths of gasoline/diesel and electric engines. These cars are growing in popularity because they are environmental friendly and they produce less pollution as compared to non-hybrid cars. Moreover, hybrid cars are also more cost effective, and their performance is up to the desirable level. Following are some main components of a hybrid car:
There are two types of hybrid cars: parallel and series. A parallel hybrid car can use either the gasoline engine or the electric motor to turn the transmission; while in a series hybrid car, only the electric motor can generate transmission to the wheels. The gasoline engine is used to charge the batteries of the electric motor only.
Hybrid cars are of two types including, parallel and series. The difference between the two kinds of car is that the parallel hybrid car can use either an electric motor or gasoline engine for turning the transmission, however, in a series hybrid car, the transmissions to the wheels is generated by electric motors only. The gasoline engine also functions to charge the batteries of electric motor.
Hybrid cars feature efficient engines; small sized, regenerative breaking that makes the electric engine to act as generator; fuel-efficiency; advanced aerodynamics that lowers the drag co-efficient and light weight materials that reduces the weight of the car. The fuel efficiency of the car is brought by periodic engine shut-off. Today, hybrid cars are also entitled as green cars as they are environmental friendly. The advanced technology installed in these cars is incomparable. Therefore, hybrid cars are highly-designed and really competent.
